Corporate Citizenship

cares

It is of the utmost importance to the Honey Bun Directors as well as a large part of the company mission statement that Honey Bun employees are happy in their working environment. Not just financially but physically, emotionally and spiritually.

From this reasoning the “Pepper pot” initiative was born. As in its famous Jamaican namesake, the soup, a Pepper Pot of employees is ‘a whole bunch of different tings mix up to mek some ting good.’ The group’s members are employees from all areas – directors, managers, supervisors, production staff. They meet once a week to discuss issues within the working environment and to implement possible solutions.

As a company we also strongly believe in coming together as one, in the mornings for our weekly devotions.

Giving Back

In today’s society where so many underprivileged people go unnoticed, we feel passionately about letting these people know that they are cared for and loved. Every Christmas we conduct a Christmas treat at one of the Missionaries of the Poor homes in Jamaica which caters specifically to the sick and disabled who are often abandoned by their families.

Throughout the year we make considerable product donations to churches, schools and hospitals on a weekly basis, to help offset some of their expenses.

As a corporate citizen we’ve designed our school dayz competition to serve two of our most heartfelt responsibilities. We’ve always felt that it is very unfortunate that most students don’t have the necessary tools that most first world schools consider a fundamental part of the learning process. Additionally we feel there is not enough being done to encourage and emphasize the value of having an education to the youths of Jamaica. A prize of 3 computers, a printer and internet access for a year is given to the winning school of the competition. Three students also receive their own personal laptop. Honey Bun has awarded 29 comptuers to date through this program.

Through our school dayz initiative we are able to reach over 150,000 students in Jamaica, spreading our message of education through fun and interactive activities with the children. Jamaica is filled with individuals who have many hidden talents that often don’t get the opportunity to express themselves. Our popular “singathon sing a sweet song” activity allows children to express their positive views and opinions on having an education through song. Children are asked to make up original songs about the importance of having an education. The children perform these songs when our school dayz team comes to their school and the top students go on to have their songs aired on our media partner Zip 103 fm. This allows us to transcend this message form the 150,000 face to face interactions from our visits, to kids and teens island wide!

Honey Bun cares about our environment, playing an active role in its preservation. This is done on a daily basis when raw materials used in the making of our products are recycled. For example, thousands of egg shells are used to make fertilizer every day, barrels of cooking oil which would normally be discarded are recycled as Diesel oil. While we try to keep waste and spoilage to a minimum, if it does happen, local pig farmers benefit as this is sent to their farms as pig feed.

The Honey Bun Fun Village, boasts numerous environmentally friendly properties. Hundreds of tires are burnt at the Riverton City dump causing serious issues: Asthma in children within the area, damage to the Ozone layer, breeding of malaria carrying mosquitoes.

Honey Bun recycles these tires as constructive elements in the fun village, preventing them from being burnt. Additionally, the Honey Bun Green team is an ever present part of our Honey Bun Village. They collect all plastics for recycling and remind patrons of the importance of taking care of planet earth.
